Abstract

It is yielded a brief review of studies concerned with implicit (unconscious) processes in Western psychology. Basic points of their prehistory are marked. The definition of implicit processes is outlined. It is emphasized three broad topics in which researchers examine implicit processes. First ones are implicit processes, such as memory, perception, thinking, language, and learning. Second are implicit social-cognitive processes and implicit personality, such as social attitudes, stereotyping, prejudice, Self-conception, and Self-esteem. Third are implicit emotions. They are discriminated on lines of implicit sources of affect, implicit experiencing of affect and implicit regulation of affect. Besides, valenced emotions, as well as specific, equally valenced emotions remain inaccessible to conscious awareness, and still differentially affect behavior. Relationships between implicit and explicit processes are discussed as well.
