Abstract

The paper describes the research and working activity of Prof. V.A. Kudrin and his scientific school. They pioneered in research of metal oxidation in oxygen-intensified open-hearth melting, developed a technology of producing quality steel in natural gas heated open hearth furnaces, studied the structure and properties of liquid iron, iron–carbon and iron–nickel alloys, developed a method of steel refining by injection of powdered materials, investigated physical properties of steel refining slags and their behaviour in metal deoxidation, designed watercooled roofs of electrical arc steelmaking furnaces. Pedagogical activity of V.A. Kudrin included the development of a unified curriculum, research done with academic staff, post-graduate and undergraduate students, founding the branches of Moscow State Evening Metallurgical Institute at Moscow industrial enterprises, training of undergraduate and post-graduate students, candidates and doctors of science, writing textbooks and tutorials, and the work of teaching staff in foreign countries.
