Abstract

The paper dwells upon the concept of linguistic variability and its role in language
functioning. It presents an overview of contemporary opinions regarding the concept in
Russian and world linguistics. The paper also deals with several approaches to variability

from synchronic and diachronic perspectives. The author examines different types of variability
(diatopic, diachronic, diastratic, diaphasic, diamesic) and introduces a new approach
to study the concept of variability in the history of the French language using the
term “diasystem”.
