Ecclesiastical sewing in the sacristy of the Cathedral of St. Simeon of Verkhoturye (To the question of the monastery workshops of gold sewing of the XIX century in the Urals)

Abstract

The article addresses the ecclesiastical goldworks which are housed in the sacristy of the Cathedral
of St. Simeon of Verkhoturye (Chelyabinsk). The article provides insight into one of the types
of artistic embroidery, namely ornamental embroidery. The study deals with some artistic features
of the development of this art form in the XIХth century.
The cult objects were considered as works of decorative and applied art which participate in liturgy.
The analysis of the works revealed, how the elements of secular and folk embroideries influenced
the ornamentation of ecclesiastical sewing.The relation between folk art and religious orthodox art
in the spiritual culture of the Urals was specified.
