Abstract

“The Key of Understanding” is the most influential musical and theoretical
treatise of the end of 18 c. Its author is a monk TikhonMakaryevsky. He presented a
system of correlation between old Znamenny and a new for Russia Kievan notations.
The Key provides information about znamenny signs, phitas, persons and lines.
The information is presented as stroke marks with cinnabar marks and musical
and linear lines. Informative, communicative and normative functions inhere in
the musical and theoretical work. The purpose of “The Key” is a description of
the “vocabulary” of znamenny chants. The treatise is a work of a didactic nature
created to verify and extend the information about znamenny chants. From all the
materials “The Key” is a universal dictionary
