Divorce in the Russian Empire at the turn of XIX—XX centuries

Abstract

The task of the article consists in studying divorces in the Russian Empire at
the turn of XIX—XX centuries. The author considers the problem in the frames
of daily life history. The author analyses the legislation regarding divorces and
possibility of its application. The article reveals difficulties with which partners
faced while willing to break their marriage. The main attention in the article is
drawn to the consent of church in divorce grounds. The work comes to a conclusion
on non-compliance of divorce practice to the life reality of the investigated
period and church and state uncertainty in regard to the transformation of the
studied sphere of family law.
