The meaning of russian traditional ornamental motives for the development of modern graphic design

Abstract

The article reviews possibility of using Russian ethno-cultural traceries, including
the traditional ornament, in modern graphic design. The correct techniques of
traditional ornament and font are analyzed in this article, as well as the necessary
of connection creative and scientific approach to get a quality design product. The
history of ornament and its importance to world art culture is summarized here.
The article criticizes superficial and dismissive approach in ethnic ornamental
traceries in design engineering. Here you can see design experience, where the using
of Russian ethno-cultural traceries is not only permissible but necessary. The
successful example of using the Russian ornament is described in details. The main
attention is focused on the possibility of using the archaic ornamental traceries in
modern graphic design to get a high-quality product. At the conclusion the article
tells about quality design product, which can be created by using ethnic traceries
based on a scientific approach and caring for the national cultural traditions.

  • Dmitry Gennadyevich Shernyh

    was born in 1971. In 2004 he graduated St.
    Petersburg Academy of Art and Industry of Baron Stieglitz as a specialist in graphic
    design. Now Chernyh Dmitry is a lecturer of the Design and Arts Department, the
    Architecture Faculty of the South Ural State University (Chelyabinsk, Russia). He is a
    member of the Russian Union of Designers
