Catholic component in the Dominico Trezzini’s works: to the problem definition

Abstract

The article focuses on the religious bases of the architect Dominico Trezzini’s
creative works. The authors turn their attention to the activities of architect as the
warden of Roman Catholic Parish in St. Petersburg. Trezzini played a greater role
in the organization of St. Petersburg Catholic parish. The scientists attest it with
new archival materials. The discovered documents generate new problems in the
studying the history of Russian architecture. Authors pose a question about the
influence of the Trezzini’s Church activities on his works. The paper opens a new
course in the studying the architectural heritage of the architect. The article deals
with the question about balance of secular and religious originations of Trezzini’s
creative works and analyzes compositions of the Peter’s Gates and the Peter and
Paul cathedral. The works of Trezzini is presented in a context of the development
of baroque architecture.
