Abstract

Gavrila (Ivan) Basov is one of three brothers -- drawing-artists, who since the 1580-s years had
become famous and carried out large orders for the rewriting and decorative design of hand-written
books. The author presents in the article discovered by him remarkable monuments of bookishness,
connected with name of Gavrila (Ivan) Basov. Among them there are ones, completely executed by
the master, and also written together with brothers or only artistically decorated after their writing
by other scribes. The author of the article considers the newly discovered Gavrila’s manuscripts
created during his work at the Trinity-Sergius monastery, substantiates the attribution of handwriting
and decorations to the outstanding master. Studying the artworks of the master in the context of
the products of the other drawing-artists shows that he reached the highest level in the art of book
ornamentation.
