Cameo on malachite, for jewelry and interior. Notes to the dating and attribution
Abstract
The article is devoted to the original branch of artistic application of Ural’s malachite by
the European masters of the 19th century as a relief carving, his classic manifestation (cameos
and jewelry parts) and monumental works. The reason of this research is one accumulation and
systemization of the existed information for the creation of the clearest idea about the existence and
development of this decorative technic applied to the malachite. For this we are made a definition
and a detailed analyze of the dated pieces of art, for the first time was made the systematization of
the information about the most important centers and artists executed some cameos on the malachite.
Also, was definite the circle of the clients and his tastes (at the first — the members of the two
generation of Demidoff family). For the first time in this article is published in detailly analyze the
original piece of art — model of the Vendom’s column in malachite; based on the realized analyze
we propose some argument for his attribution. In the result of the realized research are published the
new information about the application of the Ural’s malachite in the works of European artiste-graver
in the first half of the 19th century.
