Abstract

The author of the article deals with the phenomenon of implementation of Russian national identity
in musical art on the basis of Prokofiev’s music to the film “Ivan the Terrible”, directed by Eisenstein,
within their mutual cooperation on creation of Ivan’s image. This phenomenon in the artistic embodiment
of the image of Ivan the Terrible and his epoch by the composer is determined as peculiarities
of the author’s musical material in their correlation with the archetypal basis of the Russian musical
mentality (znamennost, folklorism) alongside with the principles of the Russian musical school, the
European traditions and individual creative style. The most important tasks involve identifying the
semantic-associative relationships with the leading national ideas of the epoch of Ivan the Terrible
in the work of art, as well as the analysis of the methods of implementing these ideas in creating the
image of the tsar and his time. The article determines possible directions for the further research of
the musical texts, which reveal the specific complex of artistic means, the composer’s aids aiming at
implementation of Russian national identity in music
