Orthodoxy and bureaucracy: solution of ecclesiastical issue during the Great Patriotic war

Abstract

The paper shows complex and contradictory process of relations between the Soviet State and
Russian Orthodox Church in the extreme conditions of wartime. The paper reveals essence and
causes of new religious policy of Stalin’s regime. Based on example of activities of the Party-State
bureaucracy of the Urals, the paper demonstrates willingness of bureaucracy to restrict religious feelings
of people as well as willingness for total control over ecclesiastical structures and institutions. It
is concluded that compromise was tactical and Government used this compromise for consolidation
of society in the fight against external enemy
