Composition of textile ornaments of geometrical complex as a semiotic structure
Abstract
The purpose of this article is to study the basic elements of geometrical ornamental complex on the
example of works of textile art. Circle, cross, square and some other ornaments are used in textiles since
the Neolithic. The semantics of textile patterns have been studied by many researchers — ethnographers,
archaeologists, art historians. Textiles, preserved to the present time, represent the encrypted «text».
This conclusion can be drawn by studying the role of traditional textiles in rituals connected with the
cycle of human life. The deeper meaning of ornaments in the twentieth century has been lost, although
the ornaments continued to exist and be used by textile artists as decorative elements. The geometric
ornaments of the ancient complex can be seen in the works of contemporary textile art — tapestries,
art objects and installations. Particularly interesting are the works, where the ornamental symbol is the
main element of the composition of artwork.
